Name Of Test Or Operation:
Video Fluoroscopy
Other Names Test Or Operation Known By:
Video Swallow, Swallow Study, video barium swallow
Reason The Test Or Operation Was Carried Out:
To check for a "safe" airway, swallowing problems and possibly see reflux and check for aspiration.
What Was Your Experience Of The Test/Operation:
Our daughter was sat in a chair and the video X Ray machine was positioned in front of her. She was fed a variety of foods and drinks of different thicknesses with small amounts of barium on. We have actually had this done twice, the first time the results were inconclusive because she was very distressed, but then she does have sensory issues. The second time was calmer and I took foods I knew she liked in and a cup she was familiar with. The results are interpreted by a speech and language therapist specially trained in feeding issues and video swallow studies.
After Care:
The test helped the SALT to give appropriate guidance on seating, careful eating and food & drink textures that our daughter can cope with. It gave reassurance that she is safe to ingest food and drink orally.
