Ultrasound of Pylorus

Kitty's picture
Name Of Test Or Operation:
Ultrasound of Pylorus
Reason The Test Or Operation Was Carried Out:
To check for Pyloric Stenosis
What Was Your Experience Of The Test/Operation:
The test was done when our son was 2 weeks old as he had severe projectile vomiting. The sonographer laid our son on the bed, removed his lower clothing and put the ultrasound to his stomach. She then measured the pylorus muscle to check for thickening which narrows the passage to the stomach. The sonographer concluded the pylorus was thickened and so our son was diagnosed as having pyloric stenosis.
Next Steps:
After the ultrasound our son was transferred to St George's Hospital in London for a pyloromyotomy which was done 2 days later. During the operation they discovered he didn't have Pyloric Stenosis after all but had severe gastro reflux.
After Care:
no aftercare needed for the ultrasound.
