Transplant FAQ's

The UK Transplant website has some really useful FAQ’s. I’ve summarized a few of them here but if you want to read the full article visit: How to become a donor
Which organs can be transplanted?
Kidneys, heart, lungs, liver, pancreas, cornea and small bowel are currently transplanted
Does the colour of my skin make a difference?
No because organs are matched by blood group and tissue type (for kidney transplants). However, patients from the same ethnic group are more likely to be closer matches.
Can you donate an organ while you are still alive?
Kidneys are the most commonly donated organ from a living person but part of a liver, possibly a segment of lung, and possible part of the small bowel could also be transplanted.
This site also gives the average waiting times for transplants, the location of transplant units and information on how organs are allocated. Interesting reading!
