Probiotics for children - dairy/soya/egg/wheat free

Biocare do a wide range of probiotics for children - they even do a powder form for little children - strawberry and banana flavour. They also do straws that have probiotics in for children to drink through.

Has anyone used probiotics with any success? I am thinking about getting some, but I am concerned as there is so much mixed advice on the internet. Do any of the Consultants think they are a good, or at least not harmful idea?

Hiya

We've been using Biocare Stawberry Acidophilus Plus and I checked with our dietician at GOSH if there was any reason why I shouldn't give it to the boys and was told it should be fine. I was just told to check it's not one with dairy or other vitamins/minerals in.

I have also started giving them a special Omega 3 that has nothing else added to it (no vitamins/minerals as they already have a supplement for these) and they haven't reacted to that either.  I can give you details if you want it. I started the Omega as i'd heard it can help with inflammation?

I don't know if the probiotics have worked or not as my boys are now in their better time of year gut-wise, so it will be interesting to see if it makes a difference in the winter. It certainly hasn't harmed them so we will keep using it.

You can get the Biocare online or some health stores order it in for you - has to be kept in fridge. I think it may also come in banana flavour and we give it in their Neocate.

Hope this helps,

Thanks

K

Thank you for that. I will get some!!!

I have been giving Omega 3, 6, and 9, but no difference. It is an oil form. In what form do you get omega 3?

We were advised to use acidophilus by one consutlant at GOSH.  The dietician there has now recommended one called VSL3 as it has more "good bugs" in it.  It can be got on prescription.

Good luck.  Anything worth a go!

Hiya

The omega 3 we have been trying is Viridikid 100% organic omega-3 oil from Viridian. Can't tell you if it works or not yet but i'm willing to give anything a go at this point!  We bought it from a health food shop in Guildford but the local one may stock it or order it in for you if you wanted to try it.

Just to warn you it doesn't taste great so many need to be disguised!!

Hi Helen

Was it the Dieticians at GOSH that recommended it? Did they ask your GP to prescribe it or did you ask your GP direct? Just wondering the best way to get it prescribed for my 2?

Thanks!
