It's been about 6-7 weeks since we were at Great Ormond Street and they gave us tips on how to help our 3 year old son get back to eating and being less scared of choking. We didn't see any improvement for the first month but things have definitely started to improve now. He was screaming hysterically about food and refusing to eat/drink after a serious of bad chokes.
We've stopped having meals at the table as this seems to stress him out and make him more anxious. He likes being fed rather than having to feed himself. He is also happier now we aren't trying to get him to eat a varied diet and are just letting him eat what he feels comfortable with - which is often more 'snack' type food rather than meals.
He's also much calmer about having his teeth brushed which is great.
He's only choked twice since the last appointment and the chokes weren't as serious as they've been in the past - it was easy to dislodge the food, once he even got it out himself before i got to help him.
He is still having a pint of Neocate a day to make sure he gets the nutrients he needs, which helps me feel more relaxed about what he eats.
I just hope he doesn't have a bad choke which could put us back to where we were a few months ago. A SALT feeding specialist is coming on Wednesday to watch him eat - I am hoping she'll be able to reassure us that there's no physical reason for the choking.
Will update when she's been.
