Mechanical support of the heart for children on transplant list

How mechanical support of the heart can help children survive whilst waiting for heart transplant. An article by UCL Institute of Child Health 2003
This article gives interesting information about how receiving mechanical support of the heart can significantly reduce the risk of death whilst waiting for a heart transplant in children over 1 year of age.
The study showed that using two types of mechanical support – VAD (ventricular assist device or external mechanical heart) and ECMO (extra-corporal membrane oxygenation – a type of life-support machine for the heart and lungs) could help.
