If your child is having night terrors then you may like to read the advice from Dr Jane on the ICH Institute of Child Healthwebsite. It covers:

- why night terrors happen and why they usually occur a few hours after a child has fallen asleep. It also goes through the symptoms - restlessness, eyes open, screaming out and pushing parents away.

- it discusses possibe causes including genetic links and the relationship between night terrors and a child being overtired and emotional stressed.

- it also covers ways of dealing with night terrors such as sitting with your child and making sure they are safe.

- although they often can't be prevented, Dr Jane recommends ensuring your child has regular sleep patterns and is feeling calm at bedtime and she outlines the possibility of waking your child before the night terror usually occurs.
