DMSA Scan

Name Of Test Or Operation:
DMSA Scan
Other Names Test Or Operation Known By:
DIMERCAPTOSUCCINIC ACID
Reason The Test Or Operation Was Carried Out:
For repetitive UTI (urinary tract infections)
What Was Your Experience Of The Test/Operation:
Our son had this test done twice and it wasn't as bad as i was expecting. Our son was given a numbing cream on his hand and then had a canula put in - the DMSA chemical was then injected. we were asked to wait in the hospital for about 3 hours and then return for the scan. Both times, our son was scanned lying down and the scanner went round him. It was quite boring and i recommend taking toys or portable DVD's to entertain your child. i rewarded my son with a present as soon as the scan was over. you have to encourage your child to drink so i also took his favourite drinks with me. You have to wash your hands carefully after changing your childs nappy (if in nappies) due to the radioactivity and if you are pregnant you aren't allowed in the room where they inject the radioactive dye (this happened to us) so take another person with you so they can support your child.
After Care:
no after care needed really - just had to get him to drink. he was fine as soon as we got home!
