4 year old suddenly finding noises painful

hi,
my 4 year old son is suddenly complaining that noises hurt him and he covers his ears a lot.
He has been doing this for a few weeks. he was very sensitive to noise as a baby but we thought that was because he'd been ill and in hospitals quite a bit.
his hearing then seemed fine till recently. does anyone know what could cause this?
i have had the doctors look inside for infection but they said the ears looked fine.
thanks K

Our eldest has had a hearing test and the audiologist said that my sons problem is likely to be that he had mild glue ear when he was younger (he had quite a few ear infections and waxy ears) and that this has now cleared which has improved his hearing. It's the improvement in his hearing that's making everything sound so loud. They said he'll adjust to it in time and will find noise less painful.
Good news!!
