The Information centre is a resource that is created by the users of Parentsown.co.uk.
If you have information (white papers, useful links, studies, advice etc) that you think other parents could benefit from add a page (using the link below) to create a new page in the Oral/Mouth Problems Information centre book.
All links will automatically turn in to a web link, and you can attach files (pdf's, Word documents etc) if you wish.
The more pages we add the more information there will be for parents to search on.
My kids have been prescribed Difflam Spray (benzydamine) which you can spray directly onto the ulcers to numb them before you eat / before teeth brushing etc.
It really helps! You can ask your doctor to prescribe it if your kids get lots of ulcers like mine do.
if ur child has problems with mouth ulcers, like my 5 year old does, then you may want to look at this site i've found www.mouthulcers.org.
it has a page with all the available treatments and how sufferers rate their effectiveness. The link is:
Hi
I just wanted to reassure parents who have been told their child has a tongue-tie. We discovered our son was tongue-tied when he was a few days old. He had been crying a lot and restless at the breast and i was extremely sore after feeding him. During a midwife visit, she noticed he was tongue-tied when he was crying. She referred us to a local post-natal ward that had a specialist midwife who was able to perform the tongue-tie separation.
We were taken to a room where the specialist nurse explained what would happen. I have to admit i was too distressed to stay so i asked my husband to hold our son whilst it was done. Sterile scissors are used to snip the the tongue-tie and immediately a swab is used to stem blood flow. I'll be honest - they do scream whilst it's being done.
My son was then brought to me for a feed as we were told that putting him to the breast immediately would soothe him and also help stem the blood. As soon as I fed him, he stopped crying and soon fell asleep. I'd worried myself silly about it being done but our son was fine and it wasn't anywhere near as bad as I thought it would be!
We had no problems afterwards and it healed fairly quickly. He was able to breastfeed more easily and we were told it would also benefit his speech development.
Hope this reassures someone.
Did you know recurrent mouth ulcers can be caused by a deficiency in vitamin b12 (due to not enough in diet or an inability to absorb it - especially if you have gut problems), iron or folate?
You can ask your GP for a blood test to check if your child is deficient.
I found a website that lists some other causes too - the link is:
i've been looking for information on videofluoroscopy tests (my son may be having one) and thought i would share the info I found in case it helps another parent.
the best sites i've looked at are:
http://www.ich.ucl.ac.uk/gosh_families/information_sheets/swallow_test/s...
http://www.rbht.nhs.uk/patients/condition/videofluoroscopy/
http://hcd2.bupa.co.uk/fact_sheets/html/qanda/barium_swallow_and_meal_qa...
From what i can gather, a videofluoroscopy swallow is used to investigate swallowing problems such as choking, coughing, weight loss, breathing difficulties, taking a long time to eat. The test can also look for 'aspiration' or 'penetration' of food into the airway.
A Videofluoroscopy is done in an X-ray department and involves recording a 'moving x-ray' showing swallowing either food or liquid. The key thing here is that your child has to be willing to eat / drink during it!
Apparently you don't have to starve your child before hand which is good. you have to bring food/drink on the day. Parent/carers are allowed to stay with their child (although not if u r pregnant). 'barium sulphate' is mixed into the food/drink so it shows up on the x-ray, then the child has to sit next to the camera and eat/drink normally whilst camera takes pictures.
The swallow test usually takes under 30mins and some information sites say the results are given same day.
Hope this helps someone.

if your child has choking episodes like my son then you may want to look at this website as it has an illustrated guide on what to do when your child chokes!
