Making Easter Fun on Special Diets

With Easter just around the corner it can be hard for families with children on special diets.Easter on special diets needn't be a nightmare

With so many treats and goodies about at Easter that are all unsuitable for people with allergies and intolerances it can leave some children feeling a bit left out.

But it doesn't have to be that way, we have put some ideas together that lets everyone have fun and ensure that Easter is a real success:

 1. There are a growing range of ‘freefrom’ Easter treats available – check out our list of the best ones in the parentsown.co.uk freefrom supermarket (please always check allergy information and ingredients before purchasing)

2. If you can’t find any Easter treats that suit your families diets then you could make your own using chocolate moulds, or you could buy papier mache eggs and fill them with sweets or small toys.

3. If you can’t find suitable chocolate for Easter hunts then try buying small fillable plastic eggs (try Hobbycraft) and filling them with sweets or a small toy. You could also cut out egg shapes and laminate them and then hide them for the children to find. You can make this more fun by giving them baskets to fill with them. Another version of this is to cut out eggs shapes from different patterned paper (or draw patterns on them) and then cut them in half, zigzagging so that the children have to find two halves of the same egg! You can exchange collected eggs for prizes!

4. Try making an egg shaped piniata – this is so easy to make with just a balloon, strips of newspaper and a glue made from plain flour and water.  Cover the balloon in strips of the newspaper soaked in the glue (leaving an area at the top of the balloon where you can stuff the piniata). You will need 2-3 layers. Once it has dried, you can then pop the balloon and fill it through the hole you’ve left. You could fill it with sweets, toys, mini packs of raisens etc. Then you will need to cover the hole with more newspaper strips and let it dry. Paint the piniata and decorate it to look like an Easter egg, then let the kids have fun trying to crack it open!
