Dear Feeding Clinic, My 7 year old has always gagged eating certain foods and it has improved in recent years but sloppy type foods like mashed potato or things with mixed textures and sauces still make him gag. He prefers dry textures and I think it's because of this gag reflex. He had severe reflux when he was younger (has it milder now)which i'm guessing is the cause? He occasionally gags at the sight of sloppy things too, including things like snotty tissues and nappies. Is this something that he'll grow out of? Thank you

Hi

In our experience children normally grow out of this phase. It is difficult to be specific with advice as it depends on his medical and eating history and growth. We would suggest you see the GP and request a speech and language assessment to understand the cause of the gag reflex.
